Best months December to April (northeast monsoon, driest); May to November for Hanifaru Bay mantasFly into MLE Velana International Airport (Hulhule Island, North Male Atoll)

The Maldives is a chain of 26 atolls in the Indian Ocean where nearly every luxury resort occupies its own island, reached from Velana International Airport by speedboat, seaplane or domestic flight. Baa Atoll was inscribed as the country’s only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2011, and South Ari Atoll is one of the few places in the world with whale shark sightings year round.

Baa Atoll

Snorkel with manta rays at Hanifaru Bay

Season runs with the southwest monsoon, roughly May/June to November. Snorkel only (no diving), visitor numbers are capped, and the resort must hold a permit; book in advance.

02
South Ari Atoll MPA · family

Whale shark excursion

The only known year-round whale shark aggregation site; operators recommend December to March as the most reliable window. Never guaranteed.

03
Velana International Airport to outer atolls

Seaplane transfer

Velana hosts the largest seaplane operation in the world; flights are daylight-only, about 30 to 40 minutes to Baa or Noonu atolls.

04

Surf Cokes and Chickens

Reef breaks a short speedboat ride from the airport. Cokes is a shallow barrelling right for experienced surfers only; season March to October, peak June to September.

05
Fuvahmulah · adventure

Tiger shark dive

Dive operators work the harbour mouth where sharks gather daily; a 70-minute flight from Male to the island’s own airport.

06
Mudhdhoo (Vaadhoo), Raa Atoll · couples

Night walk on a bioluminescent beach

Plankton glows when waves break on the sand; choose a moonless night for the strongest effect.

07
Noonu, Baa or North Male atolls · couples

Overwater villa stay

The signature Maldives experience; Cheval Blanc Randheli, Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru and One&Only Reethi Rah all offer overwater villas. Water villas at Randheli have been listed at around $3,450 per night.

08
Male to Noonu Atoll · couples

Private seaplane charter

Cheval Blanc Randheli operates its own eight-seat seaplane that can be privatised for the 40-minute crossing.

09

Sunset dolphin cruise

Dolphins appear routinely at sunset off resort reefs; most resorts run a 60 to 90 minute dhoni cruise.

Resort islands

House reef snorkelling

Nearly every resort island sits on its own reef, so snorkelling from the beach needs no boat; Baa Atoll resorts sit inside the biosphere reserve.
