Open the offersSantorini is the crescent left by the Minoan eruption, with Fira, Imerovigli and Oia strung along the caldera cliffs facing the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. The Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, buried in ash, lies at the south end, and the island’s black and red sand beaches face the open sea on the east and south coasts.
About 10 km, 3 to 5 hours, mostly level with some climbs and almost no shade; start by 8 am in summer and walk toward Oia so the route trends downhill.
About 2.5 hours by caique from the old port: a 30-minute, three-quarter-mile climb to the crater, then a swim in warm sulphur springs for strong swimmers only.
Guided visits to the ash-preserved Minoan town; the eruption is dated to the 17th century BC by most sources.
Cooperative founded in 1911 with sunset views over the caldera; vines are trained in basket-shaped kouloura against wind and sun. Argyros and Domaine Sigalas (Oia) are the other classic cellars.
Free viewpoint; arrive at least an hour early, or walk down past the old castle walls for a lower, quieter angle.
Foot-passenger boats make the 10 to 20 minute crossing 3 to 4 times a day; tickets are sold at agencies on Santorini, schedules change, ask locally.
Beach clubs line the roughly 7 km Perissa-Perivolos strip; the sand gets very hot by midday.
Hilltop ruins at roughly 396 m with views over both Kamari and Perissa; hours vary by season and the site has closed days, check before going.
Cave suites with private pools are the island’s signature; Grace sits at the highest point of the caldera in Imerovigli and Canaves Oia is at the entrance to Oia.
The monastery’s feast is 20 July; the fortress-like building on the summit is a museum of religious art and the drive up is narrow with steep drops.
