Santorini is the crescent left by the Minoan eruption, with Fira, Imerovigli and Oia strung along the caldera cliffs facing the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. The Bronze Age town of Akrotiri, buried in ash, lies at the south end, and the island’s black and red sand beaches face the open sea on the east and south coasts.

01
village

Oia

The northern tip village famous for sunset; the remains of the Venetian castle of Agios Nikolaos, dated around 1480 and largely collapsed in the 1956 earthquake, are the usual viewpoint.

02
town

Fira

The capital on the caldera edge; roughly 600 steps or a cable car link it to the old port below.

03
village

Imerovigli

Quieter village at the highest point of the caldera rim (about 350 m on the Fira to Oia path), with full caldera views and fewer crowds than Oia.

Stay nearby: Grace Hotel Santorini, Auberge Resorts Collection
04
archaeological site

Akrotiri archaeological site

Minoan town preserved under volcanic ash, with frescoes, furniture and pottery intact; often called the Greek Pompeii. Pair it with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira.

05
volcanic island

Nea Kameni

The active volcanic islet in the caldera, 15 minutes by boat from the old port, with a steep 30-minute walk to the crater over loose lava.

06
beach

Red Beach

Red lava cliffs and dark sand near Akrotiri, reached by a steep 20-minute walk or by boat; parts have been closed since 2013 landslides.

07
beach

Perissa and Perivolos

The island’s main black sand strip on the southeast coast, about 7 km in total, below the Mesa Vouno headland.

08
archaeological site

Ancient Thera

Classical-era city on the Mesa Vouno ridge at roughly 365 to 396 m, founded in the 8th or 9th century BC; reached by car or on foot, not by bus.

09
village

Pyrgos and Profitis Ilias monastery

Inland hill village below the monastery of Prophet Elias, founded 1711 or 1712 by two local brothers at about 560 to 586 m, the island’s highest point.

10
beach

Vlychada beach

South coast beach backed by pale wind-sculpted pumice cliffs formed from the Minoan eruption deposits.
