Open the offersThe Riviera Maya is the Caribbean coast of Quintana Roo running south from Cancun through Playa del Carmen to Tulum. Offshore is the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second largest reef system in the world; inland are thousands of cenotes and the Maya sites of Tulum and Coba.
Arrive at opening to see the clifftop site before the tour buses; allow 1.5 to 2 hours.
Freshwater cavern snorkeling in clear water about 5 km from Tulum; many cenotes forbid sunscreen to protect the water.
Guided boat trips through the reserve’s lagoons and a float down a Maya-era canal; dolphins and turtles are seen on the Punta Allen route.
Guided snorkels at set hours over the seagrass where green and loggerhead turtles feed; life jackets mandatory.
Licensed boats take small groups to the reef minutes from shore inside the national park.
A guided 1.5-hour route through a partly flooded cave system with helmets, wetsuits and headlamps.
Ferry from Playa del Carmen then boat dives along current-swept walls and coral swim-throughs.
Rent a bicycle or pedicab inside the site to cover the jungle paths between the ball courts and Nohoch Mul.
Underground river swims by day and the Mexico Espectacular show in the evening.
About 2.5 hours by road from Playa del Carmen; combine with a cenote swim on the way back.
